Terms and Conditions
These terms constitute the agreement between the User and barber.box. They cover the barber.box website, the barber.box app and the Studio app. Creating an account or using any of them constitutes acceptance of these rules. The section on bookings deserves close reading: it determines who answers for the service provided in the chair.

The operator
barber.box is operated by, and the contract is entered into with:
Hugo Abreu, a private individual resident in Portugal.
Any matter should be addressed to [email protected]. Questions about personal data, to [email protected].
What barber.box is
barber.box does two things: it publishes a directory of the barbershops in Portugal and it provides booking software to those who run one.
- On the site, barbershops are found by city, each one has a page, and the contact details are there.
- In the barber.box app, appointments are booked, with the chosen barber and service.
- In the Studio app, barbershop owners manage the schedule, the team, the services and the prices.
barber.box is not a barbershop. It does not cut hair, does not employ barbers and provides no barbering service of any kind. It provides only the means through which the booking is made.
Accounts
Booking an appointment and managing a barbershop both require an account.
- Sign-in is by Google account or Apple account. There is no barber.box password.
- The first sign-in serves as registration.
- Use of barber.box requires an age of 16 or over.
- The name, email address and phone number given must be correct and current. Barbershops rely on them in order to serve the customer.
- The account is personal and non-transferable. The account holder answers for anyone with access to the device where the session is left signed in.
Where the User's connection to the barbershop they manage ends, access is withdrawn on notice to [email protected].
The booking is with the barbershop
Booking an appointment constitutes an agreement between the User and the barbershop. barber.box is not a party to that agreement, and is only the means by which the booking is made.
That holds for every barbershop. The directory includes thousands of barbershops that never signed up to barber.box, with pages built from public establishment data. They are not partners of barber.box.
- The barbershops listed are not selected, assessed or verified.
- No barbers are employed or supervised, and no training or instructions are given to anyone.
- The price, the duration, the quality and the outcome of the service are not controlled.
- Licences, insurance and compliance with the barbershop's legal obligations are not confirmed.
- There is no guarantee that the barbershop keeps to the appointment, that it is open, or that it still exists.
The barbershop answers for the service provided and for any harm caused in the course of it. Where something goes wrong in the chair, the matter has to be taken up with the barbershop. It should nonetheless be reported to [email protected], and that information is used to correct or remove the listing.
Obligations of those who book
Booking an appointment constitutes a commitment: the barbershop reserves that time exclusively and cannot sell it to anyone else.
- The customer must attend at the time booked. Where attendance is not possible, the booking must be cancelled in the app as far in advance as possible.
- Failing to attend without notice takes work from someone who was waiting. Repeated no-shows may lead to the account being limited or closed.
- Payment for the service is made at the barbershop, unless the booking states otherwise.
- The rules on cancellation, lateness and deposits are set by the barbershop and should be clarified with it.
- Those providing the service must be treated with respect.
barber.box may not be used for false bookings, to reserve appointments there is no intention of using, or to harvest data from the site automatically.
Obligations of barbershop owners
This section applies to those managing their barbershop's page and schedule in the Studio app.
- Only a barbershop that is the User's own, or that the User is authorised to represent, may be claimed and managed.
- Opening hours, services, prices and contact details must be kept correct. A wrong price on the page is a matter between the barbershop and the customer.
- The service booked must be provided at the time booked, or the customer must be told in good time.
- The barbershop is responsible for the service, for its quality and for the safety of whoever sits in the chair.
- The tax, licensing, insurance, hygiene and employment obligations of the business rest with the barbershop. barber.box is neither its employer nor its partner.
- Customer data received through barber.box is for serving those customers. It may not be used for any other purpose or passed to third parties.
The barbershop likewise answers for what its team does in the Studio app with the access it was given.
Studio subscription
The Studio app is paid for by barbershop owners. Booking costs the customer nothing.
- Price
- 19 euros a month, per box. A box is one physical barbershop: two shops mean two boxes and two subscriptions. An annual plan is also available.
- First month
- Free. Only the following period is charged.
- Booking fees
- None. The subscription is the only sum owed to barber.box.
- Payment
- Handled by Stripe. It takes card, MB WAY and Multibanco. Card details are neither seen nor stored by barber.box.
- Renewal
- Automatic at the end of each period, at the price then in force. Any price change is notified in advance.
- Cancellation
- At any time, in the Stripe billing portal, from the Studio app. Access continues to the end of the period already paid for, and the unused part is not refunded, save where the law requires it.
- Tax and invoice
- The subscription is sold and invoiced by barber.box. No VAT is charged, under the exemption in article 53 of the Portuguese VAT Code, so the amount stated is the full amount payable.
- Failed payment
- Where a payment fails, there is a 15 day grace period during which the charge is retried. After that period no new bookings come through barber.box and the shop's page stops accepting them. The schedule and the whole history remain visible, and the shop can still manage its hours, services, prices and team in the Studio app. Bookings customers have already made are never cancelled. The shop's page remains published in the directory. Once payment is settled, everything is restored.
The price shown on the pricing page at the time of subscribing is the one that applies.
Right of withdrawal
Decree-Law 24/2014 gives anyone contracting at a distance as a consumer 14 days to withdraw from the contract, with no reason required. The Studio subscription is taken out for the barbershop, in the course of the subscriber's professional activity, including where the business is a sole trader, so this contract is not covered by that right.
The 14 days are given in any event, as a commercial guarantee. Where the subscription is cancelled within 14 days of the first charge actually paid, that amount is refunded in full, on notice to [email protected].
This section concerns the Studio subscription. A booking at a barbershop is not a contract with barber.box and carries no cost: it is cancelled in the app, within the barbershop's own rules.
Directory listings
The site publishes a page for every barbershop in Portugal, including shops that never signed up to barber.box. That data did not come from the shop. It came from publicly available sources of business information.
- Only facts about the establishment are published: name, address, location, opening hours, phone number and business category.
- Reviews, ratings and photographs from those sources are not republished.
- On an unclaimed page, services and prices are never invented. Without prices entered by the owner, no price list is shown at all.
- The phone number is shown only after a click to reveal it.
The owner of the establishment may claim the page in the Studio app and take control of it. From that point, the information published is the owner's responsibility.
Where the listing is not wanted, notice to [email protected] with the name and address of the establishment is enough, and the page is removed. Anything incorrect is likewise corrected, or the phone number alone removed. No justification and no account is required.
barber.box may correct, update or remove any listing, including those of barbershops that have closed, duplicates, and any shown to be wrong.
Reviews
Reviews on barber.box are left by people who actually attended the establishment.
- Only the customer of a booking may review it, and only once.
- A review consists of a rating from 1 to 5, with an optional comment.
- It is published on the barbershop's page, together with the author's first name.
A review must describe the experience honestly. False reviews, reviews unrelated to the service provided, insults, hate speech, third-party personal data and content published for consideration are removed.
A review is the opinion of its author and not that of barber.box. Publishing it constitutes authorisation to show it on the barbershop's page and in the site's results. Removal of one's own review may be requested at any time.
A negative review is not removed merely because the barbershop disagrees with it. Where there are grounds to believe a review is false, the matter should be reported to [email protected] and it is checked.
Liability of barber.box
The service is provided as it is and as it is available.
- There is no guarantee that the site and the apps are always available, or free of errors and interruptions.
- There is no guarantee that directory information is accurate or current. Barbershops change their hours, their address and their owner.
- barber.box does not answer for the service barbershops provide, for what they write on their pages, or for what users write in reviews.
- barber.box does not answer for failures of the third parties it depends on, such as payment at Stripe or notification delivery.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that the law does not permit to be excluded, in particular for intent or gross negligence, for harm to life or health, and the rights Portuguese law confers on consumers.
Beyond those cases, and as regards those subscribing to the Studio app in the course of their professional activity, the total liability of barber.box is limited to the amount paid in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to it.
Suspension and closure
The account may be closed at any time. Closure is requested at barber.box/en/data-request and the data is deleted, save for the records the law requires to be kept. Where a subscription is active, it must be cancelled first, so that no further charge is made.
Access to an account may be suspended or closed where:
- barber.box is used against these terms or against the law.
- There are false bookings, repeated no-shows without notice, or abuse of those working in a barbershop.
- There are paid-for reviews, reviews written by someone who was not a customer, or reviews published to damage a competitor.
- Someone claims a barbershop that is not theirs.
- There is automated data harvesting, an attempt to circumvent technical limits, or an attack on the service.
Wherever possible, the decision is notified and explained beforehand. In serious cases, suspension is immediate and the explanation follows. The decision may be contested at [email protected].
barber.box may also be discontinued. In that event, closure is announced in advance and the part of the subscription already paid and not yet used is refunded.
Governing law
These terms are governed by Portuguese law.
The Portuguese courts are competent for any dispute. Where the User is a consumer and no agreement is reached, the dispute may be referred to the Centro Nacional de Informação e Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo (CNIACC), which holds residual competence across the country: www.cniacc.pt. That is the consumer alternative dispute resolution entity named by barber.box.
A User who is a consumer keeps the protection conferred by the law of their country of residence in the European Union, and may always go to the courts of their domicile.
Changes
These terms may be changed, in particular where the service changes or where the law changes.
Where the change is material, it is notified in the app and by email before it takes effect, with at least 30 days' notice to those holding an active subscription. Where the change is not accepted, the subscription may be cancelled before it takes effect.
The updated date shown at the top of this page governs: if that date has changed, the terms have changed. The previous version may be requested by email.
